This is a storyline that fundamentally changes the goal of your character in Escape From Tarkov. No longer are you simply trying to escape from this place, although that's certainly a goal in the back of your mind. But after you died for the first time, you knew immediately something was horribly wrong with this place. You just died, yet you are still here. And there's this... sound, something like words echoing in your mind... Is this all just the work of Terragroup? Or has something far worse transpired here?


Well, that's up to you to figure out in this story that I have been working on for almost a year.


So, what really is this?

Guiding Light is a massive trader mod, with just over 200 quests given mostly by the primary trader, only known initially as "Guiding Light". However, you cannot play all 200 quests in one playthrough. This is because this story has multiple endings. Yes, you read that correctly. This trader has multiple endings, some good, some bad, most with their own unique ending questline that can only be experienced by "choosing" that ending. However, you won't know what ending you're gonna get until you get it, so read those quest descriptions and make the right choice! Oh yes, you think there could be multiple endings without choices to be made? There is a second trader after all...


However, this is not the bulk of the quests. 200-so quests is way too long for a story from one entity! No, the bulk of the quests are the Skill Quests, the original intention of Guiding Light before the Lord burdened me to speak something of Him through this creation. Every skill in the game* has a short "questline" involving various tasks and challenges related to that skill, which will reward the player with leveling that skill. The amount of quests, and therefore the amount of levels gained, depends on the skill itself. Generally speaking, skills that tend to level up faster in normal play will have less quests, whereas skills that are still level 12 at the end of the wipe will have up to 5 quests. As this mod wraps up development, I will make sure that more of the quests feel unique and interesting to play through.


*Search is not currently included. This is coming soon, don't worry. I have a fun idea for it.

    I have not gotten a chance to fix some of the bugs that have been mentioned because I do not have 3.11 installed right now. I am aware of them and will fix this eventually. These bugs include:

    -FL quests retroactively failing once the GL quest is completed even if you already completed the FL choice

    -Jammers on the radar dishes acting weird

    -Probably other bugs that aren't coming to mind at this moment

    99% of this is just a 3.10 update for GL, though there are a couple quest changes here and there. Bug fixes, inconsistencies patched, spelling corrections... Again, generally speaking, if you're still on 3.9 you really aren't missing much. Though, since 3.9 cannot be downloaded, I do not plan on updating 3.9 in the future.

    -Completely changed Light Vests 2. Please read the task in game.

    -Changed all 24 hour time gates to 16 hour time gates. I wanted the quests to be "come back the next day", but 24 hours meant the quests weren't unlocking until the end of the play session rather than the beginning. There were 8 quests affected by this.

    -Fixed "While They're away" (I think, let me know)

    -Changed "Damage Report" to VisitPlace instead of LeaveItemAtLocation (You no longer need a shotgun shell to "mark" the quest spot)

    -Reduced Light Vests 4 from three repair kits to two

    -Increased the amount of kills needed for Light Vests 3 (20->25)

    -Reduced the amount of kills needed for SR1 (10->5)

    -Slightly adjusted Strength 3 (you must now survive the raid after completing the challenge)

    -MIGHT HAVE FIXED IMMUNITY 5 BUT I DIDN'T TEST IT

    -possibly other things I forgot, I don't actually track these very well

    Guiding Light is nearing completion. There will be multiple small updates after this, however, this is the last "large version" until full release.


    There are too many changes to list, both because of how much has been added, changed, or removed, and because I have been working on this on and off and have simply forgotten every small thing. THE IMPORTANT ONES ARE THE FOLLOWING:

    -Added three new endings to the storyline, as well as added quest rewards for the first ending and the fourth ending. I will look at the other two and decide what their reward will be.

    -Roughly 50 new quests have been added

    -A significant amount of the original skill quests have been fixed, and some have been changed.

    -Multiple custom items have been added, exclusively as quest rewards.

    -A large number of the quests have been given images. This is also why the file size has jumped massively.


    Again, please. Delete both guiding light folders before updating.

  • Having the same problem as a few other people where trader pic turned white and name turned to russian. Seems to have happened right after I completed the task where you find nuts, bolts. It froze up and turned white after I accidentally accepted a task that said it was broken as I was accepting all without reading.

    • Also every time I leave and re enter the trader screen the glitched trader duplicates. Also breaks trader scrolling mod. Also breaks the trader intermediary screen. Also duplicates ALL traders on the intermediary screen.

    • Same here the Quest "Finding Materials" is defo somehow bugged. Trader pic turns white and all my other Traders are bugged as well.

    • I appreciate you guys tracking down what specifically was broken! I will get on that in just a few minutes here, hopefully will have that fixed soon.

    • Y'all, I've been looking at this for like an hour, and I'm not seeing anything wrong with it. I'm not getting any of these errors that you guys are getting, I've tested everything I can without spending the next 3 days playing tarkov to get this quest naturally. I'll reupload the mod to Github as it is, please let me know if that fixes it. If not, I'll need more information

  • As Hoffman said, have the same bug for a while now, thought maybe those were other mods, but after uninstalling and reinstalling, it is most likely this mod.
    Bug: icon for GL is always loading and neither "esc" nor scrolling traders are not working, everytime I enter traders, it makes a ghost copy usually of prapor with blank white trader icon.
    But unlike Hoffman, after couple of reinstalations, it did not fix itself, load order did not help either, so for now I will probably wait for a fix, still awesome mod, but will wait till it won't break trading menu.

  • The guiding light trader icon is stuck permanently loading for me, and well... If I go to the trader intermediary screen, I cannot use any of my keyboard binds (ESC) and have to manually click off and into my inventory.

    Once the symptoms above happen the trader icons duplicate and well, the trader screen becomes unusable.

      Somehow fixed the issue by doing literally nothing.

      Reinstalled the mod like 10 times without it fixing itself, and on the 11th or so try it just worked, couldn't tell you why.

    • Sounds like Tarkov. I'm not sure why that was happening, I'll keep an eye out for anyone else reporting it.

  • I was wondering if the other trader that comes with the mod is locked behind a quest, or do I have it bugged?

    • If you're referring to the trader [???], yes. This trader is unlocked through the GL quest. And I believe the unlock timing is relatively late (I unlocked it around level 45). Hope this helps!

  • The workout quest doesnt complete for me even after training but i allready had a gym build before getting the mod

    • Just confirming, you entered a raid with the debuff, correct?

  • Hello, I really like the mod you made, but I've encountered two unsolvable problems during my playthrough... (I'm using a translator, please excuse me)

    First problem: I can't place a jammer on the antenna on the roof of the west building while I'm doing the mission [While they're away], I don't know if it's an interaction problem or some other any other problem, but I think maybe I should submit this problem to you? (I had to use the archive modifier for this mission :P)

    Second issue: when I do the mission [REAP], the mission progress resets to zero after evacuating the location, so maybe that means I have to kill enough targets to get to 200 in one battle game? That's crazy, so I think it should be a bug. :P (While doing the mission REAP, I completed and turned in a GL mission, is that a possible reason?)

    Lastly, thanks for the mod, I really, really like it :3 I'll be looking forward to the finished version of it. <3

      I think I've had people talk about While They're Away before, I really needed to look into that. I haven't actually launched a raid of SPT in months x-x

      I've finished one of the endings : [ENDING 1/4: WARDEN OF PURGATORY] and to be honest, I really, really like the plot of this ending! It was so cool! It seems that when FL first contacted the protagonist, he clearly expressed his intention to help the protagonist “build a playground”, so is it a two-way street between the protagonist and FL to choose this ending? (Haha, I really like FL!!!)


      There's a couple of minor issues I'd like to keep feeding back to you on: When reaching this ending, it seems that FL's favorability is only 5.98, so it doesn't buy the [Mark of the Beast] injection? (I can't buy it until I'm at favor level 4.) I don't know if this is intentional or what, but I'd like to use this injection anyway XD (BTW, I got this injection by chance before I got to FL, and I was still discussing with my friend why “The real cost is NOTHING...? “? Now I understand, because even if the protagonist dies because of the injection, it will come back to life again and reset everything :whistling:


      One more. It seems that when completing the GL vs. FL selection quests, they somehow fail the quests? For example, for the [Enjoy the show] quest, I talked to FL first, and at that point it showed completion. But when I exit the game and go online again, it shows failed in the list of completed quests.

      Of course it doesn't actually seem to have any effect, it just looks a bit strange XD (I've attached a link to a picture, which you should be able to see if there's nothing wrong with it) I thought it was an interesting question, so I'm sending this back to you!

      Now I'm challenging the other endings, and these quests are a lot of fun, thank you for making them! I'm looking forward to what kind of fun the other endings will give me! (On a side note, I was wondering if we'll see some hints about the ending conditions once they're made? I see that there are four endings, but I'm not sure what their precursors are at the moment XD Maybe there are some endings with more specific conditions?)

      Interesting that completing a GL quest will retroactively fail the FL quest... I had never noticed that before. I will look into a way to get around that, thank you. I'm guessing that's the main reason your FL favorability isn't at 6? It definitely should be. I can also increased the loyalty reward from completing that questline to be a number way above 6 to avoid that happening. And yes, I need to remove the item from bot spawn tables XD


      I think providing some clues into which ending the player is on is a great idea! I will look at how to add that.

      (P.S. You are almost right about the description of the "Mark of the Beast" item. There is a real cost to it... but FL overrides the description and changes it to 'NOTHING' instead of letting you find out what it is. Perhaps some people know what it is, perhaps some don't. Knowing or not doesn't change anything within the mod, it's just a bit of an easter egg.)

      Hmm, I do have a few questions though.

      Do you allow players to create fan works based on this mod? (Like writing stories?) Or to promote it? If possible, I’d love to create something to help spread the word about your mod!


      Also, it’s no exaggeration to say I’ve played EFT for years, and I’d nearly lost interest until your mod reignited my passion for it! Love you! (BTW, I looked it up and finally learned the real cost of those stimulants, lol.)


      Another issue: The [Chaos] quest sometimes seems impossible to unlock. It shows [6760c92fa9591580542b423d.1 name] and stays locked. I’m guessing it’s because I completely ignored FL? Not entirely sure.

      (Edit: I noticed you released a new update, but since I’m still on 3.10, this is a 3.10-specific issue. Not sure if it persists in the latest version.) :whistling:

  • The quest "Chaos" seems very bugged. It says "hand over what you found in the marked room" with a blue check mark, but can't turn anything in. it also adds the same objective every time you view the quest, along with showing up in every other quest you view.

    • Oh also, i believe 9x19 PBP can no longer be crafted so i can't do top of the line, and Partisan doesn't count for Gladiator :kannatiredofthis:

  • The lack of a guide or walk through for the riddle quest is crazy I get the whole "it'll ruin the fun" thing but not everyone knows how many ball hairs parpor has on his left nut

    • All of the locations are simply locations of quests already in the game. In fact, I directly reference the quest in most cases. That being said, which riddle is giving you trouble? I'm sure I can come up with a hint.


      (Intellect isn't a very important skill in this game anyways, you can always just ignore the questline)

    • I get it i was just making a funny and recommending making a little cheat sheet for those who do little thinking and more shooting, no need for hints as i really haven't even tried lmao.

  • this looks like a very interesting mod. but im not sure if i got it right... so does this add a new trader and permanently change the way i normally play the game? or can i stop the guiding light story for a bit and do other traders' quests?

    • It doesn't change the way you play the game in the sense of "You have to fundamentally change how you play Escape From Tarkov in order to experience this mod." It's meant to be a new story, as well as a way to fast-track your soft-skill levels by completing challenges related to each skill. You can absolutely stop the guiding light story and work on vanilla quests, there's no negative interaction between them. In the future, I do plan on having quests that temporarily give a "time limit" / raid limit, but there would be a warning before you get into that situation.


      TL;DR: you can stop the guiding light story at any point and play as if the mod didn't exist.

      BTW i found i didn't need to "place" the 7mm shell i just needed to have it in my inventory, dunno if that's a bug or intended, didn't affect me, but just thought id mention it. I think I was placing something else in the same spot for another quest so that might have confused it.

    I have other traders mod, VCQL, realism, questing/ looting bots, plus other minor things.

    • I know that questing bots is a little bugged with the mod because of a single quest error on my end (hurray x-x). If that's not the reason, then idk. I'll be updating the mod sometime next week, God willing.

  • What is a 7mm shot which should be put somewhere in quests?

  • I'm like, 99% sure that the "Adding a little something" task is failing to work because the "Cutting them off" task allows me to place the jammer, but when I remove the jammer from my inventory and replace it with a marker, I do not get the prompt to place.

    I could also be completely wrong and dont know how to use my brain, but I thought that commenting might help someone in the future with this problem too (Absolutely love the mod so far btw!) <3

  • Hey all! I apologize for disappearing for so long.


    In short, I have been learning how to code at a professional level. As of later tonight (Lord willing), I have completed the Junior Programmer pathway on the Unity page!!!


    I have a church conference that I will be attending this weekend, but when I get back on Monday, this and a mod for another game are tied for my #1 "I want to do this next" spot.


    TL;DR: I will be back very soon and I will fix the things!

    • Looked into it, sometimes questing bots gave a good hint in the server logs.

      But it all boils down to a circular dependency on a quest.

  • Hey man great mod but I got to quest 53 or something and now I just have no more quests. Are they locked behind a timegate? But I have remove timegate mod installed? I also might have skipped a couple quests with terkoiz skipper - would this cause any problems? All my other traders and mods seem to work... :/

  • questing bot has been crashed with GL's combat skill quests. I think if a AMC had killing quest likes tarkov shooter or SBH(questlines must kill with some spec weapons), questing bot can't read GL's combat quests or there recoments. I had delet all GL's combat skill quest, and they can play with questing bot plugin has activate. only wants for your help, TA out.

  • Can't use Questing Bots because I'm so far into GL and removing custom traders is a no go. GL is straight up incompatible with the newest version of Questing Bots

  • Picked up this mod kind of on a whim as I was hankering for more quests
    And I absolutely fell in love with it!
    I love the perfect blend of humor and seriousness and how you able to weave some of the game's abstractions into real, diegetic elements of the universe!
    I also really appreciate the encouraging the player to try out new gear that they might not have used before to see if they like it!
    overall, I'm looking forward to future expansions on the story!
