how do you gain access to those forks, I made a github account and when I click on the fork icon it just prompts me to make a new fork.
What you are trying to do is actually forking the repository yourself to contribute to it.
To see the forks of an existing project you need to click on "Insights" at the top of the page and then on "Forks" on the left.
