Light-dependent Bot Vision

This mod's development was driven by desperation: with the apparent end of ThatsLit support, I felt there was a serious gap in the SPT mod array. For many, ThatsLit was a core mod, its absence leaving SPT somewhat unplayable. So I did a little research and undertook to try and throw something together.

What results is a much different mod, far less complex and professional, and containing far fewer features -- I am not the guy who can remake ThatsLit, nor have I tried to. Instead I've attempted to produce something that works pretty well most of the time. I basically assume that everybody playing SPT has SAIN installed, and some of the gaps in this mod can be plugged with SAIN presets (eg. detection times affected by indoor/outdoor, weather, etc).

Ombarella functions like this: a camera is constantly circling your player at random positions, essentially taking photos of you at fixed intervals. Each 'photo' is analyzed to determine how light or dark it is, and contributes to a running score of how much light is emitted from your character. This score is then pushed to the bots, and entered into the value of the time it takes for bots to identify you as a target.

One of the nice upsides of this method is that your gear color is inherently calculated into your visibility factor: darker and grayer clothes and kit will result in a lower visibility score, especially at night and in dark places.

Early days for this mod - feedback welcome.

  • Sounds amazing, but I feel like that camera method kills fps

  • Is there a calculated performance impact on higher end hardware?
It's safe to assume that there is some impact as that's lit also had a heavy impact on your frames, but do we know how much?
Also big props to the mod creator, good work.

  • Sounds awesome, what about those of us not using sain?

  • Hey, I cant see the light indicator at all despite the mod appearing on my f12 menu. I have no idea why that is.

    • set the position values to zero. They're off your screen, you just can't see them. Set them to zero and position them where you want. Eventually I will make this less jank.

      Thumbs Up 1
  • Yooo looking forward to eventually try this one out

  • Serious question (hope I don't sound stupid) does Reshade effect what the camera picks up on the "light score" or even the tarkov post effects?

    • No, the camera that takes the screenshots is not effected by your player camera "filters".

While Reshade is more than just a normal filter, it doesn't go that deep into the game, it only affects shaders and visuals for your POV/camera.

    • Thanks

  • Turning down pixel sample from 5 to 4.8 with light distance set to 8 instead of 12 or pixel sample of 4.5 with a light distance of 10 fixed all problems for me. Oddly this mod never introduced any performance differential but it made my characters head bob and gun bounce like I had a limp 😭 turning the mod on and off with scavs in the area make it night and day that this mod works like a charm so far.

  • Does it need to be on headless as well?

    • I'm thinking no.

    • Hmm. If the headless client is responsible for making AI decisions, but doesn't have any of the graphics modules, I wonder if the camera approach here would take some work to make viable (e.g. every player client would send lighting information to the headless client, and that'd have to handle lighting on a per-player basis).

  • It has a very noticeable performance hit sadly.

    • Did you try turning it down? There is a slider

    • Yes I played around with the settings a lot. It's very noticeable sadly. I was excited for an eventual return of That'sLit and this mod got me pretty excited but I can't run it. And so far the server I set up runs like butter, headless + server on another PC, but this managed to kill performance.

    • I'm sorry about that. I have no idea how to integrate correctly with fika, but it doesn't really add up. Maybe each bot is spawning its own camera...perhaps a subject of further research.

      Thumbs Up 1
    • Also, try not installing on the headless. Headless needs only things that other bots need in the plugins folder - they don't need this mod. You do, put it only on the client.

    • You can try the latest 3.11 pull request on That's Lit Github but you basically have no support in using that fork

  • Clothing desperately needs to be accountable for the environment.

    • I've already written something to account for it. Will test next week

      Thumbs Up 2
  • Thank you kindly, mate!

  • Little piece of advice - if you can't find indicator at screen change X and Y coordinates to zero, it will put it at center of screen. After that relocate it as you see fit.

  • You are so fricking based 😭

  • This is a rather interesting way of handling player visibility against AI. Certainly a creative one.

  • Very interesting - Especially with the camo/light for clothing. I could see there being a potential bug/unintended interaction there, which is black clothing would work better than white in the winter/snow.

One thing you could do there is have the clothing camera do a pass on the background as well, and compare the player with the background to see if there's a difference, and then if it's close you're blending in.

Also, That'sLit is MIT License and the dev said he's not working on it, so you could probably integrate his code with yours if you wanted a base to work off/to use his code as well (Don't quote me on this though, probably want to check with Drakia)

    • It's something I've already thought about, yes. First I want to see people's experience with this basic implementation. And I can take it from there.

  • oh if this doesnt eat framerate then this is a brilliant mod

  • Since the mod takes a snapshot of your character in-raid, I'm assuming it may impact performance? I get stutters as it is because my PC is a potato, am I correct in assuming using this mod will make them worse? I might download and try myself later anyway if no one responds, but figured I'd ask beforehand anyways!

Looks like a great mod, perfect compliment to SAIN!

    • Perf impact can be reduced a lot, you just get a more lagging rate of change.

      Thumbs Up 1
    • Cool, thanks for the quick reply!! I'll give it a try later on, thank you :)

  • Does it work with headless?

  • very interesting that you found a way to implement clothing being effective. Looking forward to trying this.

  • Give this author a cookie, its deserved

  • Maaaaaan if its works somewhat like thatslit and not eating FPS , you are a genius! You can have oats and hay ! bugcatheadbumping bugcatrainbow bugcatdrunk
